Ted Chiangs Story of your life and others is a sci-fi short story and it is considered as Ted Chiang's one of the best short story. The story is about a women named Louise who is a linguistic expert and her way of communication with aliens. The movie named 'Arrival' is based on this story. The story starts when some aliens arrives on earth unexpectedly. However when every reader thought that all allusions are pointing at a war between aliens and human, Ted Chiang showed that how possible re-interpretations of physics and language acquisition can change our consciousnesses.
The aliens are called heptapods for their seven-limbed radially symmetrical appearance. Louise and Dr. Gary Donnelly are hired by U.S. army to establish communication with the aliens. However they successfully made contact with two of them. U.S. army named them Flapper and Raspberry. But it wasn't easy for Louise to understand their saying since the aliens don't use any methods which are understandable for humans. All they use is a kind of round shaped graphs. But Louise isn't an ordinary person. Soon she was able to understand what the aliens were trying to say.
One day, after an information exchange with the heptapods, the aliens announce they are leaving. They shut down the looking glasses and their ships disappear. It is never established why they leave, or why they had come in the first place.
